E. W. Godwin Attributed, for Collinson & Lock. Ebonised & Parcel Gilt Side Table Chess Table
Price on Application
This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.
Attributed to E. W. Godwin and made by Collinson & Lock, this ebonised and parcel-gilt side table chess table aligned with the Aesthetic Movement (circa 1860 to circa 1890), c. 1875.
The table has an octagonal glass top set above hand-painted scenes on silk, combining a decorative upper surface with the compact proportions of a side table or games table. The ebonised ground and parcel-gilt detailing give the piece the rich graphic contrast associated with advanced Aesthetic Movement furniture of the period.
The design is recorded in Clive Edwards, Collinson & Lock 1870–1900, illustration 4.165.* See the last image.
