E. W. Godwin, Attributed. Anglo-Japanese Mahogany Chess Table

Price on Application

This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.

Probably made by William Watt and attributed to E. W. Godwin, this single drawer chess table in mahogany aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1870–1879), c.1870.

The table is arranged as a compact open frame, with an inset chess-board top above a plain middle shelf, a single drawer, square legs, twin lower stretchers and a small central lower shelf. The drawer retains brass drop handles with dot decoration to the backplates, giving a restrained detail against the simple rectilinear structure.

The attribution to Godwin is carried by the disciplined spacing of the tiers, the spare square-section frame, and the Anglo-Japanese handling of open structure and surface. The probable William Watt manufacture is consistent with the period context of Godwin’s furniture production and the table’s precise, economical construction.
