E. W. Godwin, Stamped Collinson & Lock London 7245. An eight leg Anglo-Japanese sideboard with brass sabots

SOLD

E. W. Godwin stamped Collinson & Lock London 7245. An Anglo-Japanese sideboard. The upper glazed three door cabinet with a dentil moulded cornice and line moulding below.

The lower moulded section breaks slightly forward, with a fine line moulding slightly below the exposed upper legs. A large internal open void that in turn is divided into three voids by the front two legs. A lower open shelf unites the eight legs that are raised on brass sabots.

This is a spectacular design, architectural, economic, flat surfaces, voids, unbroken lines, minimal detail in the mouldings, raised high off the ground, it has everything from Godwin's hat, and, it's a furniture makers dream, there's not a turning to be seen. There is a wonderful lightness and delicacy in it's composition that only the touch of Godwin could create from such a sparse piece of furniture.
