E. W. Godwin, Attributed. Anglo-Japanese Walnut Music Cabinet with Cloud Aprons
Price on Application
This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.
Attributed to E. W. Godwin, this walnut music cabinet is aligned to the Anglo-Japanese Aesthetic Movement (c.1860–1900), c.1880.
The cabinet has an inset square top above a dentil-moulded frieze, with an open shelf below enclosed by Japanese-style cloud-form cut-outs. The lower section is fitted with fielded panels to the visible sides, using stepped rectangular mouldings comparable to panels used by Godwin on the Butterfly cabinet. See: The Secular Furniture of E. W. Godwin by Susan Weber Soros, page 227, illustration 369, and a design for a sideboard on page 204, illustration 327.
The door opens to reveal a segmented interior arranged for music storage. The base is raised on splayed legs united by a further cloud-form frieze below the cupboard section. A closely related sketch for a table in a private collection shows a comparable arrangement of upper surface, open tier, drawer or cupboard section, and shaped lower apron. See: The Secular Furniture of E. W. Godwin by Susan Weber Soros, page 156, illustration 221-1. See last image.
