This Anglo-Japanese ebonised armchair follows the style of E. W. Godwin and was produced around 1880, when his furniture design was reshaping the visual language of the Aesthetic Movement (1870 to 1890). Godwin’s synthesis of Japanese restraint with English vernacular form created a modern domestic aesthetic grounded in proportion, clarity, and lightness.

The armchair unites a curved back with a pierced top rail and turned spindle gallery above an open splat. The sweeping arms and turned front legs suggest Jacobean influence, while the clean ebonised surfaces and disciplined geometry reveal Godwin’s modernist intent. The seat has been professionally reupholstered in fine leather, sympathetic to the original material palette.

Designs of this type bridge Old English craftsmanship and Anglo-Japanese simplicity, expressing the reformist ideals of British design in the late Victorian period. The piece remains sturdy and well-preserved, with light surface wear consistent with age and use.
