MW L&CO 6 - An exceptional L&Co Tudric box with a stunning Pre- Raphaelite Maiden executed in Enamel with electrifying colours. Stamped 0586 to the base. Circa 1904-05. £POA.
Representations of the human figure are very very rare in Liberty Tudric wares especially pre-Raphaelite Maidens, there is an identical version on page 30 of 'Liberty Style' by Mervyn Levy. To the left & the right of the maiden there are 2 'Y' shaped posts with oblong tops & another oblong shape a little further down with a 'Y' & then 3 legs running down which were quite baffling to me at first, Mervyn Levy states they are stylised trees although I thought not & after careful study I could see that they are actually Dove Cote's which would also tie in with the Romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelite or Medieval maiden because of course the Dove is the bird of love & in her hand it is quite likely to be a piece bread. There is actually a very similar dove cote in my village & the last image is of a Voysey drawing held at the R.I.B.A where he has designed a dove cote of a very similar design to those each side of the Maiden, which proves as much as one could without knowing the artist or being there at the time it was made that they are most probably dove cote's.
Thank you kindly. Tony.
