CL 6
Bruce Talbert (1838-1881), an important Reformed Gothic brass triform mantel timepiece, the movement stamped ‘UAP Brevete SGDG’, with inscriptions that read :-
The Web thou Weavest Everyday I Meander Off & Fold Away.
Jesus Christ The Fame Yesterday, Today & Forever.
W & G C T BROADLANDS JULY 26th 1875.
Broadlands is a very important house near Romsey in Hampshire then the home of the Temple family whose most famous member is Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865), who was prime minister between 1855-8 and 1859-65. At the time this clock was commissioned (1875) Broadlands was owned by William Francis Cowper-Temple, Baron Mount-Temple (1811-1888) who inherited it from his mother in 1869 and she from Lord Palmerston, the prime minister, at his death 1865. After William's death in 1888 the house remained in the family for a short period with his wife, Georgina Cowper Temple, Lady Mount-Temple (1821?-1901). The initials on the clock (W & G C. T. BROADLANDS JULY 26th 1875) without doubt stands for William & Georgina Cowper Temple. William Francis Cowper, 1st and last Lord Mount Temple was the son of Peter Leopold Louis Francis Nassau Cowper, 5th Earl Cowper. He was born on 13 December 1811. He married Harriet Alicia Gurney, daughter of Daniel Gurney, on 27 June 1843. He married Georgiana Tollemache, daughter of Admiral John Richard Delap Tollemache and Lady Elizabeth Stratford, on 21 November 1848. He died on 17 October 1888 at age 76.

CL 14
A stunning Arts & Crafts Grandfather Clock, firmly attributed to M. H. Ballie Scott.
The design of this clock is outstandingly pure in every detail even the copper & brass dial is an incrediable design. The dome top, with motto, the pillars to each side emulate the entrance to a Grand City Hall, the ever so slight tapering of the whole piece, the squashed ball feet tells us that this clock was without doubt designed by an architect. The motto which is so in tune with the writings of Morris, Ruskin, Webb, Rossetti etc is a purist device to bring poetry into furniture emulates the Arts & Crafts values to the highest degree, 'YESTERDAY TODAY FOR AYE' (Aye meaning Always). The most important detail of all is the Plump Doves in Opposite flight above & below each other, so perfectly carved in perfect scale & they follow round each of the two corners without any break thus continuing each dove in flight in complete form.
It is superb quality, top quality oak with some very skilful & intricate cabinet making throughout, especially to the perfect Dome top & precision turnings of the pillars & the lower square block of the pillar to emulate it's foundation with the upper shaped block which looks as though it bears a massive weight above proving again it's architectural thoroughbred.
The copper & brass dial & the hands so skilfully executed by a master craftsman no doubt at the forefront in their field at that time & we would attribute the skill of this hand-craftwork to John Pearson or to an artist who had the same amazing skills & experience as he would have to embellish that wonderful 'sun with flames' into copper, such a strong design, complimented with the Roman Brass Numerals so freely worked surmounted with diamond second details, slowly but surely hour by hour the numerals are passed by those wonderful pure sculptured hour & minute hands in conforming brass which as designed stand out as they should a little more than the copper to read the time easily from a far.
3). This clock is as rare as they come & certainly unique, even good Arts & Crafts grandfather clocks in oak (the 1st choice of Arts & Crafts designers) are very rare & this is the best I've ever seen in my entire career & without doubt a commissioned piece. It was made early in the beginnings of The Arts & Crafts Movement (mid to late 1880's) & therefore doesn't suffer from commercial restraints in any way form or fashion & when one stands back & absorbs the whole design from a visual aspect it is outstanding. The gentle tick tock brings a wonderful calm to it's surroundings & has very soothing & relaxing qualities. It has good quality workings with a twin barrel weight driven 8 day movement with single chime probably made in Birmingham which was the centre of the jewellery trade in England in the late Victorian Period.
Height 78 1/5", Depth 10 1/2", Width 18". Late C1880's.
