Glazed Bookcases
BC 4 - Howard & Sons. An exquisite & fine quality Cotswold style Arts & Crafts Oak breakfront bookcase with wonderful proportions. The half moon top with dentil moulding, dentil moulding below & to the outer cornice with 4 upper glazed doors, each glazing bar with fine moulded details & the doors opening to reveal adjustable shelves, to the centre section with 4 further cupboards below each door with fielded panels opening to reveal generous storage all on 4 through feet with arched supports. Height 85", Width 53 3/4", Depth at the centre 16 1/2". Circa 1890. £POA.
Howard & Sons were established by John Howard at 24 Orange Street London in 1820. In 1854 they moved to the centre of the West End at 22 & 36 Berners Street. They made the highest quality furniture some of the highest of the period & were commissioned by many important clients & made furniture for many important houses such as Elton Hall, Huntingdonshire & Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire to name but a few & at the end of the 1890's they made fitted the interiors for Mr Vanderbilt’s Yacht.

BC 5 - An Arts & Crafts oak bookcase with a flaring cornice & teardrop stain glass leaded doors to the upper section with arched tops & a pair of drawers below with corresponding cupboard below. Height 79", Width 48", Depth 17". Circa 1900. £1695.

BC 6 - A stunning Glasgow School cabinet designed by George Logan & made by Wylie & Lochhead. A bedroom suite by George Logan which he designed for the Wylie & Lochhead Pavillion Exhibition of 1901 also has Harebells & tiny little carved butterflys which are almost identicle, it is quite likely that this cabinet was exhibited at that exhibition.
The cabinet has a superb pierced & carved stylised butterfly to the centre back & display area below, flanked by stylsed floral carved details to the upper frontal ends & 3 fantastic lead glass panels almost certainly made by Macullocks who made glass for Wylie & Lochhead depicting 3 pure white plump Doves in flight with Harebells growing from the lower section panels in sliding doors with adjustable shelves behind. Circa 1901. Height 48", Width 47", Depth 13 3/4". £POA.

BC 7 - An Arts & Crafts oak glazed bookcase in the style of Heals with open display area to the top unusual sliding doors a wonderful feature if you have a restricted space where opening doors could be a hindrance with criss-cross details to the upper sections. Circa 1900. Height 54", Width 36", Depth 14". £POA.

BC 8 - An Oak Arts & Crafts Bookcase with adjustable shelves, Leaded glazed doors with circular details to the tops with lower cupboard inlaid to each door with Pewter, Ebony & stained Sycamore. Height 73 1/2", Width of cornice 40", Depth of cornice 15 1/2". Circa 1900. £SOLD. This one is now sold but I do get them in from time to time so please do let me know if you would like to order one.

BC 9 - A good quality Arts & Crafts oak bookcase with flaring cornice glazed & leaded doors opening to reveal adjustable shelves with Ebony & fruitwood inlay to the top & the centre & 2 open shelves below. It has not been photographed in the best setting but if you can look past the back of the van it is actually a very nice yet simple design. Circa 1900. Height 74 1/2", Width 42", Depth 12 1/2". £POA.

L&Co 42 - A top quality oak Arts & Crafts bookcase by Liberty & Co in mint original condition with extended cornice & 2 leaded glazed doors with stylised heart details & stylised copper handle flanked by 2 side shelves with twin architectural sculptured supports united to the cornice, 2 drawers with stylised copper handles to the lower section with open shaped shelf to the bottom. GO 41 - A rare Gothic Revival corner bookcase attributed to Lambs of Manchester in the manner of J.P.Seddon with dotted zig-zag inlay to the top & stylised foral details in a square at each end 2 pairs of glazed doors carved with 'Birds Beak End' details & ebony dot inlays opening to reveal adjustable shelves flanked by decorative pillars with carved floral details & inlaid with ebony dots. Circa 1900. Height 51 1/2", Length from corner to right hand end 58 1/4", Length from corner to left hand end 75 1/4", Depth 16 1/2". £POA.

GO 35 - A wonderful massive Arts & Crafts carved oak bookcase attributed to The Simpsons of Kendal with outstanding stylised foral, berry & leaf carving throughout very much in the hand of Arthur Simpson. Its a good deep bookcase with 3 glazed doors with subtle shaped detailing opening to reveal adjustable shelves to the top & 3 further doors to the base with more shelves & the best quality stylised brass handles. L&Co 47 - A good quality oak Arts & Crafts bookcase by Liberty & Co with motto that reads :- "In Books For To Rede I Me Delight". Flaring cornice with open upper display area, 2 leaded glazed doors with adjustable shelves behind, the doors with stylised copper hinges & handles flanked by 2 display areas extending from the sides with shaped slatted supports stylised copper handles & strap hinges, stamped L&Co to the handle & sweeping base. L&Co 48 - A superb quality Arts & Crafts 1/4 sawn oak bookcase by Liberty & Co of good proportions with 2 stylised cut-outs to the top back with capped central & end pillars a pair of central lead glazed door with hand stylised brass handles, flanked by 2 sets of adjustable shelves. The bookcase comes in 2 halfs & is joined together by the central cap. The images haven't come out so well, it is in wonderful condition & image 4,5 & 7 show it's true colour. Height 4', Length together 10' 1 1/2", Depth 12 1/2". Circa 1880's. £POA.

L&Co 49 - A superb quality Arts & Crafts 1/4 sawn oak breakfront bookcase by Liberty & Co, with subtle carved scrolls to each top end inside & out with a grove to the top shelf for displaying plates, a central lead glazed door with top quality stylised brass entwined handle, the ends cascading down with adjustable shelves all a little larger to the lower shelf. Height 54", Length 8' 8", Depth in the middle 13 1/4", Depth at the ends 10". Circa 1880's. £POA.

BC - A tremendous quality Glasgow School Oak bookcase design attributed to EA Taylor & made by Wylie & Lochhead with extended capped tops & semi-circular top centred with an inlaid pewter heart & open display area with 2 glazed doors with subtle arched details to the tops opening to reveal 3 adjustable shelves & 2 further smaller cupboards below with wonderful Glasgow sweep to the base & on sledge feet. GO 32 - A monumental stunning Gothic Revival Oak breakfront bookcase attributed to E.W. Pugin & possibly from Scarisbrick Hall in Lancashire of superior quality with wonderful proportions, an amazing work of Art, a real hybrid in the true Gothic Revival taste & certainly a commissioned piece. The cornice with castellated mouldings & 3 glazed upper sections each with twin doors with stylised iron strap hinges & castellated iron handles with drop down ring pulls, the doors double pegged at each corner joint & when opened the inner door has a female groove all round with a male bead protruding from the carcass which when the doors are closed fits snugly into each other a quality detail to protect important books from air & atmosphere shown in the 2nd from last image, with 4 original adjustable shelves (not shown) per section all with Gilt leather dust flaps. The 3 section cupboards below with stylised linen fold carved details to each door (an almost identical detail used in The New Palace of Westminster) with corresponding metalwork & graduated flaring base. The side Linenfold carved panels to the lower ends are different to the fronts. This bookcase was designed to hold important books & I purchased it from the North of England from a dealer who had purchased it around 20 years ago in Liverpool from a sale of furniture he said came from Scarisbrick Hall. Circa early 1870's. Height 8' 8", Length 12' 6", the top depth in the centre section is 14 1/2" & 11" deep to each side section. The base depth is 18 1/2" to the centre section & 15" deep to each side section. £SOLD.
